Sony Launch of Virtual Social Network for PS3 Players Delayed

Sony is delaying the launch of PS3 Home, a social network that will allow PS3 players to create avatars and socialize with other enthusiasts. Initially scheduled for launch this Fall, the network is now slated for early next year.

"This is going to be a worldwide service that needs to offer a wide range of functions required in Japan, in the US, in Europe and in Asia," said Kazuo Hirai, Sony Computer Entertainment head, in a speech at the Tokyo Game Show.

It's an interesting concept that I think we'll see more of. Building vibrant, virtual online communities for gamers to network just makes sense. Of course, there are many gaming discussion sites already available, but the trick will be to establish one that creates enough buzz to attract the masses. There is no reason that multiple, game-specific networks couldn't be built, but I think that a central platform, like Facebook, is needed to bind all of the bits together. What about Gamebook?
